By now you’ve probably heard of the concept of double cleansing (washing your face twice), but double cleansing isn’t just cleansing your face twice in a row, it’s the process of using two separate cleansers (oil based and water based). But is the extra step really worth it? The answer is yes, if you are doing it correctly.
The key to double cleansing is using is an oil-based cleanser first and then a water based second. The oil part of the cleanse works by breaking down the surface layer of buildup and getting deep into the pores pulling out the build-up. Oil cleansing works so great because the oil in the cleanser bonds with oils and dirt on your skin actually pulling out and removing tougher debris. The water-based part of a double cleanse works by eliminating the superficial grim and left-over residue from the oil cleanse.
Double cleansing is usually saved for a night cleanse as that is when you have more debris, build and/or make up present. Note that double cleansing with a water-based foam can be stripping of your barrier.
How to Double Cleanse:
Step 1: Wet your face, then use a teaspoon size of a liquid oil or oil-based cleansing balm. Gently rub in circular motions covering face for a good minute or two. You can add a few drops of water to your hands to help with the lather. To remove the oil cleanse, use a wet warm towel to wipe away oil.
Step2: Wet your face again, then lather the cleanser onto your face and gently move in circular motions. Rinse clean with water and pat dry.
Step 3: Apply your favorite moisturizer and/or serum.
When to Double Cleanse:
Double cleansing can be perfumed nightly or on occasions when you have worn heavier makeup, applied a thick mineral based sunscreen or when you feel you need a deeper pore refining wash.
